Proven Depression Treatment Approaches in Salisbury

Below are the five most effective counseling strategies to treat depression. We chose from evidence-based therapies that best help individuals manage their unique challenges, reduce symptoms, change negative thought patterns, and build coping skills. Please note, the strategies used to treat childhood depression differ from the strategies used for adults.  For children, please see Specialties for Children.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is often considered the gold standard when treating depression. It is one of the most widely used and empirically proven treatments. CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to depressive feelings. CBT helps individuals develop healthier patterns of thinking and coping, which can lead to improved mood and reduced depressive symptoms.

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). IPT focuses on improving relationships and communication skills while addressing social issues that contribute to depression. IPT is effective because it promotes resolving conflicts and strengthening social connections. With less conflict and stronger social connections, individuals often experience relief from depressive symptoms and feel more supported.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). MBCT combines mindfulness techniques (like meditation and breathing exercises) with cognitive therapy principles to help individuals stay present and prevent depressive relapses. It works because mindfulness reduces rumination and helps individuals break the cycle of negative thoughts that often fuel depression.

Behavioral Activation (BA). BA encourages individuals to engage in activities that promote positive feelings and reduce behaviors that reinforce depression, such as isolation or avoidance.  It works by increasing engagement in meaningful and pleasurable activities tailored to the individual that typically lift mood and improve motivation, counteracting the cycle of withdrawal and low energy.

Medication Management. Currently, our staff are not able to prescribe medications. Instead, our clinicians and therapists routinely work closely and collaboratively with clients’ psychiatrists and physicians, and we will be glad to work with yours.  We can also offer you a referral for a medication evaluation as needed.
